2012 European Year for Active Ageing ( and solidarity between generations)

What is EY2012
This year has been deemed by the European Commission as the Year of Active Ageing. This follows on from studies by the World Health Organisation showing that with an ever increasing proportion of older people, there will be a great strain on healthcare resourcing unless those growing older lead more active lives. Research also shows that although life expectancy for a 65 year old may have increased to 15 years, a large proportion of that time will be lived in a state of 'disability' of some form that seriously inhibits participation in normal city life. If the elderly lead reasonably active lives, which may just be regular walks, their 'healthy' lifespan will increase.

Our campaign
The OPC have been in contact with European and UK representatives responsible for EY2012 so they would include Brighton & Hove as part of their publicity for the year. So far we have:
  • Taken part in an interview to be shown at the UK 'Get Involved' event at Europa House 6th March 2012.
  • Attendance at the 'Get Involved event to represent Brighton & Hove Older People's Council.
  • Will be publicising the year as part of our participation of Brighton & Hove People Day.
  • Will be seeking support for a seperate Older People's Day later in the year.
  • Will be working with Brighton & Hove Youth Council to set up inter-generation activities during the year.
